1997 Asian Powerlifting Championships

The Philippine team won 1 Gold, 23 Silvers, and 15 bronzes in the 1997 edition of the Asian Powerlifting Championships. Zest trainees contributed 1 Gold, 14 silvers, and 11 Bronzes for the RP Team.

 

Eddie Torres won the only gold medal for the Philippines by deadlifting 292.5 kg in the 100 kg class. He also won the silvers in the Squat (285 kg) and Total (732.5 kg). He also took home the Bench Press Bronze.

 

Lily Pecante won all 4 silver medals in the 75 kg class with a 170 kg Squat, 65 kg bench press, 182.5 kg Deadlift, and 417.5 kg Total.

 

Tony Taguibao won 3 Silvers in the 52 kg class with his 187.5 kg Squat, 195 kg Deadlift, and 465 kg Total.

 

Mon Debuque took home a silver medal in the Bench Press with a 190 kg lift in the 100 kg class. He also won the bronze medals in the Squat (250 kg), Deadlift (250 kg), and Total (690 kg).

 

Al Batenga, in his first international stint, took home all 4 silver medals in the 110 kg class.

 

Merly Medina, a new Zest trainee and first time Asian competitor, took the bronze medals in the 48 kg Squat, Deadlift, and Total.

 

Obet Dionisio , also in his first international stint, benched 162.5 kg to win the 90 kg bronze medal

 

Melody Zafra, another first time international competitor, also bagged a bronze in the bench press of the 52kg class with a lift of 52.5 kg

 

Baby Isidro nipped Merly for the bench press bronze in the 48 kg class
