Rose Vasquez, competing in the 56 kg class, is the latest Zest lifter to become an Asian Open Powerlifting champion. Her gold medal-winning Total was 367.5 kg, a new Philippine Open record.

She easily won the Bench Press gold medal since her first attempt was way ahead of everyone else. Rose benched 92.5 kg for a new Philippine Open record. Rose also edged out Kazakhstan’s Uryupova Xeniya in the Deadlift by just 2.5 kg by lifting another new Philippine Open record of 145kg. Rose also salvaged a bronze medal in the Squat

Eddie Torres, preferring to compete in the Open division rather than the Masters division, battled it out in the Men’s 100 kg Open Division. He squatted 330 kg, deadlifted 325 kg, and Totaled 835 kg – all new Asian Masters Records. He won the Deadlift gold, Squat silver, and Total silver

Merly Medina had some problems caused by the loaders. She called for 143.5kg for her 3rd attempt in the Squat to go for a new Asian Masters record. She successfully lifted it but upon the officials’ inspection, the loaders misloaded it to 143.0kg. The IPF requires a minimum of 1kg to attempt to break a record. Since the current Asian record was 142.5kg, Merly’s 143.0 kg lift could not be accepted as a new record. With barely 3 minutes rest, she tried 143.5kg but failed because she was too tired due to the very short rest given. She still produced 4 new Philippine Masters records and brought home all 4 gold medals in the 56 kg Masters class.

Tony Taguibao, entered in the Masters II 56kg class, scared off his competition who scrambled to go up another weight class to avoid him. Tony won 4 gold medals with new Philippine Masters II records in all events.
